Statement issued by the Commission of Detainees’ Affairs and the Palestinian Society Prisoner’s Club on the 22nd  memorial of detention for the leader detainee Marwan Barghouthi

April 15, 2024

Today marks the the 22nd memorial of detention for the leader and national struggler, member of the Central Committee of Fatah Movement, Marwan Barghouthi, beside the detainee Ahmad Barghouthi.

This memorial coincides the massive aggression against our people and detainees in Israeli prisons, besides the systematic genocide in Gaza, and the historical twist that constitutes an extension of resistance and struggle conducted by our people with their blood and sacrifices over long decades.
His detention was part of targeting him by chasing, deportation and assassination attempts during the Aqsa uprising, in which the Palestinian people presented the finest image of resistance and struggle in confronting the occupation.

The leader Marwan Barghouthi and his colleagues presented a sample of resistance despite the suppression and systematic policies of torture.

Since October 7, our detainees and leaders of the Captive Movement were subjected to torture, isolation and unprecedented attacks, as the IPS intended to target our detainees and take away their rights which they obtained by blood and sacrifice.

He and his colleagues were subjected to operations of isolation and transfer, as he was transferred from Ofer prison to the isolation of Ramla prison, then to the isolation of Ohelekdar prison and then to the isolation of Ramla prison again and finally he is currently held in the isolation of Megiddo prison.

He was subjected to brutal attacks during his transfer by special forces, especially in Megiddo prison, which witnessed the most cruel torture and assaults after October 7.

These procedures and policies escalated since October 7, were not new at all, but constituted an extension of suppressive and retaliatory measures since occupying our lands.

It is worth mentioning that the isolation against the leader Marwan Barghouthi was not the first during his detention, rather, he was isolated several times and turned his experience into a front of confrontation and reinforced his revolutionary ideas.

Barghouthi continued his struggle in order to reinforce the statement of “ the occupation’s prisons were turned into universities and educational institutions”. This expression was a metaphor in the past, but detainees turned into reality to reinforce knowledge, enlightenment and education.

The Commission and Prisoner’s Club paid tribute to the leader Marwan Barghouthi and all his colleagues in prison, who continue their struggle with determination and resilience.
