In the presence of young professionals and advanced students, PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi delivered the keynote address at the European Forum Alpbach’s “Fireside Talk” on August 29 in Alpbach, Austria. The Talk was held in conjunction with the Alpbach Political Symposium and in cooperation with the Forum Alpbach Network.
Dr. Ashrawi’s speech focused on the deteriorating conditions on the ground and Israel’s willful destruction of the two-state solution and the prospects for peace and stability by means of the escalation of its illegal settlement enterprise, the theft of more Palestinian land and resources, home demolitions, the use of live ammunition and summary executions, and the illegal practice of administrative detention and the imprisonment of Palestinian men, women and children, among other violations of international law and conventions.
At the end of her address, Dr. Ashrawi stressed the importance of the international community, in particular the European Union, in exhibiting the political will necessary to hold Israel accountable for its violations. She also answered questions on the internal situation and upcoming elections in Palestine.
Following her talk, Dr. Ashrawi held a press briefing in Alpbach.
Dr. Ashrawi was accompanied by Permanent Observer to the United Nations Offices in Vienna and Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Austria for Palestine H.E. Salah Abdel-Shafi to all of her events.
